And it is a disease eating away at both our social and health fabrics.
Worse is, like people addicted to psychotropic substances, this addiction also validates itself.
I have been working hard to tame mine. It robs me of that “Being Present” moments. It is a battle most people have lost. Unfortunately so.
I’ve watched people rush to pick calls as if they’re first responders for Fire Service or hospital emergency units.
I’ve heard stories of people falling and getting serious injuries while rushing to pick calls. Someone posted about a relative that was rushing out from the bathroom to pick a call and slipped, he’s been in a wheelchair three years now.
Sadly, most of our aged parents whom their age and stations in life already conferred the privilege to not give a fvck about missed calls are addicted to same adrenaline rush to pick calls.
I have had to shout at staff to give themselves the privilege of missing a call, and returning it, that they won’t die.
There are those who can’t even miss a call in life, and there are those who CAN’T ignore a call even when they know that call would spoil their entire day.
Unless it is a call I am expecting at a scheduled time, a a call I must make at given time, there’s 50% chance that I may miss any random call. But there’s 90% chance that I would return a call within a reasonable period.
My line is not an emergency number.
I’ve been shocked by people who were shocked when I told them I couldn’t pick their call because I wasn’t with my phone at the moment they called. Either I was in the kitchen, toilet, or attending to something. The shock is that people can’t understand how anyone can be at home and not with his phone.
I have been trying to understand such compulsive behaviours. And in all sincerity, they’re nothing shot of high level addiction.
I am work in progress in making efforts to curb this addiction and live life again.
