Citation Movie by Temi Otedola: A Review

Unfortunately Citation on Netflix was a snoozefest for me.
It’s been a while I saw a movie that didn’t capture my attention from the beginning. For a movie that predictable, it dragged on like Tiger generator.
I couldn’t wait for it to end.
Fortunately, movies like this, are marketable so I wouldn’t be surprised when it clears out awards next year.

It is possible that some people found it interesting due to the infusion of the French language, and seeing their alma mater as a production site.
Not me.
Scenes from the beautiful Gorée Island were my personal highlight.
The movie would have gone its entire 231 minutes without needing the Yoruba dialogue between the medical doctor and Moremi.

I was however impressed with Jimmy Jean-Louis portrayal of the manipulative lecturer but I hated that the directors made him wear that wig ‘Shannon’ wore in Tyler Perry’s A fall from grace.
I would have said that the wig industry for black men need spiritual intervention but since there are some women like Gloria who develop hot crushes once they sight a man wearing one, more oil to their wigs. 🥂

As much as the film told a story most female undergraduates in Nigerian universities would identity with, I wish that #SexForGrades victims won that easily in reality, and female undergraduates wouldn’t be witch-hunted when they attempt to report a randy lecturer.

Let me conclude this by saying money is a beautiful thing.
It gives you the freedom to pursue exciting hobbies as the case of two characters who embodied their roles perfectly.
I mean how else would I term the daughter of an oil magnate billionaire taking the lead role in her debut movie, and then Mrs Ibukun Awosika, a Rhodes Scholar with two PHDs and one doctor’s letter, a member of 23 academic fellowships across the world, and a previous nominee for the Nobel Prize in Economics in a Nollywood feem?
Odikwa very lucky.
