Jennifer Lopez suffers a lot of criticism for her singing career, mainly from the black community in the states.
If you follow urban blogs you’d see the hate train.
How they clown Whitemoney here, is the same thing they do to her whenever she drops a new song. Her singing is often described as terrible.
Critics feel she got to the top not on her own merit but by relying on people’s vocals like Ashanti and Brandy in some of her earlier records.
Also describing her as a jack of all trade and master of none.
While I agree that J.Lo is not the best singer, I believe she’s a great hustler.
Firstly, she was always in our faces, making sure to assert herself as the baddest babe on the planet.
She never spared any expense on her looks.
From the music videos to public appearances, J.Lo captured the world’s attention, cementing herself as a style icon whose fashion choices and beauty was a widely discussed subject for years.
And that translated into successful clothing and beauty ventures. She made craaaazy millions from jeans and perfumes.
In the early 2000s when she was setting the trend, the conversation was never about her vocal disability or the ghost singers on her tracks. People danced regardless.
People just wanted to see J.Lo dazzle on their screens. She was that fascinating and loved.
If you look at what’s made her a pop culture phenomenon, it’s more about her image than her singing or acting.
Personally, I won’t call her career fraudulent as some members of the black community would call it.
It’s having the sense to play to her strengths.
She crafted the Hollywood glamour girl persona that was marketable.
Well, it blinded us to the fact that she couldn’t hit any note, but nobody cared whether she was talented or not when she was the IT girl of the late 90s – 2000s.
It must have taken a skilled team of publicists, stylists, and managers to remain extremely famous for years without being so talented musically.
I give it to her for having a solid team that pushed her brand strongly.
J.Lo was also strategic.
She knew how to blend into different crowds, even if she had to fake it.
When it’s time to do black music, she’ll collaborate with rappers and give you “I’m Real (Remix)” ft. Ja Rule, “Ain’t it funny”, “All I have” ft. LL Cool J, “I’m Gonna Be Alright” ft. Nas, Get Right (Remix) ft. Fabulous.
And also claim to be hood.
When it’s time to be a Latino woman, she will give you “No Me Ames” “Papi” and other Spanish songs.
Her ability to skillfully navigate the waters of public perception is also why she is one of the most enduring figures in modern entertainment. She’s a hustler!
Okay okay…
At least the black community should be happy with the fact that this woman has not won a Grammy Award, Oscar, Emmy, none of the major awards to date.
But no, they still enjoy dragging her viciously like she has it all.
It’s tiring.
